The neighborhood that we know today as “Little Italy” was originally a fishing town occupied predominately by Italian immigrants. It’s a hilly little place that has since been gentrified, and it now caters to high fashion and fine Italian dining. While it plays on the roots of Little Italy, the new place is a far cry from what the area used to be like.

Gaspar de Portola’s expeditions came at a turbulent time for the Western United States. Several groups were vying for resources in areas like Southern California for various reasons. England would have been able to expand from the East Coast and capture territory on both sides of the vast continent. Spain had already seen them conquer Canada, and was not willing to concede the territory they held north through Mexico.
The Indigenous Culture of Sydney
Sydney, Australia is the most populated city on the Continent. The city is built near one of the world’s largest natural harbors, and “Sydneysiders” are some of the most multicultural people in the world. For at least 30,000 years, the area around Sydney has been inhabited by indigenous people.
